Our class recently took a field trip out to the Meeman Biological station, and had a neat detour to a watery lake off to the side of the road. Spadefoot toads were everywhere! We actually had to be careful not to step on them. I don't think I could have pried these Scaphiophus holbrookii apart with a crowbar. I witnessed a couple of amplexing pairs accidently dropped by students, and the males didn't even think of letting go. What a grip! This frog often burrows underground in the day time to prevent water loss. But, apparantly, exceptions can be made.Stacey McNiell (Memphis, TN)
