Hyla chrysoscelis |
I nominate Hyla
chrysoscelis for our Herpetology Class Mascot. The reason for this nomination is because of H. chrysoscelis being nearly identical
to Hyla versicolor. When out Herping in the wild, it is almost
impossible to tell the two apart by sight yet they are different species with
their own unique songs. This is just
like the students in our class. As we
trudge back from a long field trip we are tired, hungry, and (usually) happy. To look at all of us wearing our hip waders
and doing that awkward walk that they cause, a casual observer (or an astute
observer) would never know that our interests differ so wildly. Our herpetology class is made up of future
biologists, archaeologists and more. On
the outside we all look like sweaty herp students but our calls are very
different. Some of us are Hyla chrysoscelis but there are a few Hyla versicolor hiding within the group,
happy to go along and enjoying every minute.
The large variety of interests in our class make it all the more special
that we can come together and be excited over a cute, slightly grumpy Hyla chrysoscelis.

My personal favorite - their calls at Dixie are music to my ears!
