Class Mascot Nomination: Diamondback Terrapin
How could you not vote "yes" for this little guy? The diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) has my vote, mainly because this specimen is my favorite herp out of all the local amphibians and reptiles. Its concentric rings and ridges on the carapace make this very appealing to the eye...almost too appealing. For some time, this poor guy has been considered an American delicacy among many cultures. Take a look at his cute, little spotted head and limbs; trust me, there's no way you can eat him after observing his adorable characteristics. Diamondback terrapins are located along the coast in any sheltered and pollution-free body of salt or brackish water. Don't be fooled when you see the "big man" around the coast; the larger terrapins are actually females! Although our herpetology class never spotted a Malaclemys terrapin on our weekly excursions, nominating this herp seems necessary due to its eye-catching features. Vote now, and I promise it'll be love at first sight!

Plus we got to see them up close at the SC Aquarium. And they're our TA Hannah's study organism!
