Over the summer, I saw this and many other northern water snakes (Nerodia sipedon) near a stream in John Bryan State Park, OH. This one was on the ground but I saw them most often on logs in or overhanging the water. If you try to catch them, they usually make it into the water pretty fast, but I also found out they are fast biters when cornered.
