I believe our class mascot should be a unique species that
is not only beautiful but also versatile and reliant. This animal must be able
to travel vast distances and endure various habitats in order to mimic the vast
distances and different weather we have had to travel to study herps in this
class. We have endured long trips in white vans as well as different weather
challenges. Also this animal has a counter current heat exchange system to
mirror the one in our own bodies. Additionally we want one of the most massive
species we have studied all year to represent us to show that we don’t mess
around in herpetology. We need a species that is also well adapted to their
environment with a stream lined body and vast history extending almost 100
million years ago.
I think it
is also important to spread awareness about animals that are endangered and
having this species as a mascot could bring a lot of attention to conservation
efforts. I know the South Carolina Aquarium would be proud! These animals also
have to make a run for their life when they are born form the sand to the ocean
and finally out to areas where they can feed and develop. This reminds me of
the hours we have had to spend studying Latin names which at times felt like I
was on the verge of death trying to cram more species names into my head. This
mascot is none other than the Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). They are regal creatures and should be a top
consideration for our mascot!
