Southern Cricket frog sighting on feild trip (3/28/2023)

This small southern cricket frog was found at one of the sights we visited for our herpetology field trips. The scientific name for this creature is Acris gryllus; with the common name: Southern Cricket frog.

This frog was about to be identified as a southern crickets frog is its leg length that is long compared to the length of its body. Other identifying characteristics include Toe pads indicating it most likely lives in an arboreal habitat, and slightly warty skin; not like toad. This species has varying color patterns so color can be misleading if only using the field guide. This is why it is important to go by the physical features and not just the color patterns in the body.

Along with this small southern cricket frog, two more were found on this trip as well, with similar patterns and the same body feature indications to lead to them being southern cricket frogs.

Great point about not relying on coloration with these highly variable frogs!
