Herps in the News: Taking Your Pet Snake for a Walk

One news story I found particularly interesting is one that came out in the last few days about a man being fined for having his pet snakes out in a park. He's not being fined because they don't allow snakes but because the snakes weren't on a leash. To be fair the main reason I chose this particular news story was because I found the idea of a person walking their pet snake on a leash to be the most adorable thing ever.
The original news story talks about how the snake owner brings his snakes around with him to reduce the stigma people have around snakes and to just generally educate people about them. While out and about trying to save snake reputations he was stopped by animal control. The owner had to pay about $200 in fines. Animal control did also say that if the snakes were in his hands it would be fine but they were on the ground next to him. Maybe he should tie a rope to them next time? Who knows.
I think this news story is not only pretty funny but shows how there is still a general misunderstanding of snakes and though I’m aware it would not be very likely, I hope this influences someone to design a leash and collar for snakes. There may be some vital flaws in walking your pet snake on a leash but it would give some great photo opportunities.

Maybe the guy can just take his snakes to the local dog park. In all seriousness, I wonder why the owner prefers to show the snakes on the ground rather than in a container or being held.
